5 Crucial Tips For Becoming A Magistrate

Being a magistrate is a highly responsible role. In this article I will provide you with 5 important tips to help you pass the magistrate application process.

Tip 1 - The interview process is not a traditional competitive one as at a job interview - Advisory Committees are positively looking to involve as many appropriate people as possible as magistrates and from a range of backgrounds. So, try to relax and just give the best account of yourself that you can.

What is likely to impress the Advisory Committee most is the 'real you' and whether that person possesses certain qualities. It is important that your own qualities come through rather than some polished 'performance' geared to the occasion, or worse trying to 'beat the system' by second guessing what you think that the Advisory Committee would like to hear! Remember that Advisory Committees are trained and experienced in dealing with people and sensing the genuine article. Even experienced magistrates learn something new every day. Don't feel the need to present as virtually the 'ready made article', having researched all the technical aspects of becoming a magistrate; the Advisory Committees will essentially just be looking for how well you demonstrate the Six Key Qualities.

Tip 2 - If an applicant is not obviously ineligible a first interview will often be offered as a matter of course. So, do spend some time on making sure that you have read all the accompanying notes to the application form and have completed it fully and as required. We will look later at some of the specific questions on the application form. Pay particular attention to the need to have observed a court sitting before submitting your application and the advice about 'Checking Out the Territory' above (and see also Tip 9 below)

Tip 3 - Have ready for interview examples from your own life experiences to help to demonstrate the Six Key Qualities.

Tip 4 - You need to be aware of how the Six Key Qualities are assessed. 'Good Character' and 'Commitment' will be assessed as either 'demonstrated' or 'not demonstrated'. So, with no shades of grey, you need give these two direct consideration. The other four Qualities are 'scored' and assessed as:

Level 0 = not demonstrated: little or no positive evidence

Level 1 = demonstrated: generally positive

Level 2 = well demonstrated: positive evidence

Level 3 = very well demonstrated: very strong evidence

There is no higher or minimum overall 'score' required in respect of each of these four Qualities just as long as you demonstrate at least Level 1 in each of them. You will then be eligible for appointment, on the basis that your attributes can be developed/enhanced later through training, mentoring and appraisal. However: you are somewhat vulnerable if the best you aim to score is Level 1 in all four Qualities as you may not then be 'held over' as described below; should there be many more candidates actual vacancies then generally those with the highest overall 'scores' will usually be selected (although those with lower scores will usually be held over against any future need).

Tip 5 - Advisory Committees usually work in annual recruitment cycles (although some very large areas may recruit more often and some very small areas less often). If you enquire of the Advisory Committee(s) in respect of the areas where you live and work (see 'Getting Started and Submitting Your Application') you should be able to discover which is recruiting when and also where the greatest number of vacancies might be. This may help you to decide where to apply and how to time your application (i.e. speed it up if necessary or perhaps hold it back for a time and submit it on the basis of known, up-to-date recruitment requirements).

Decide which area it might be better for you to carry out your sittings as a magistrate - near to home or near to work (assuming they are in different areas). List the pros and cons of each, based on factors such as ease of attending court, training and meetings, effect on home and social life, which area might be recruiting earlier or have more vacancies etc. If you are willing to sit at either location, then mention this on your application form and submit your application to whichever area you feel is most appropriate in your particular circumstances.

If you follow the above tips your chances of success will literally skyrocket!

5 Cheap and Cheerful Ski Resorts in Europe

Those on a tight budget may believe that a ski holiday is out of reach, but this is not necessarily true. Whilst these types of holiday are notorious for being expensive and are deemed a luxury, there are a handful of resorts throughout Europe which are much more affordable without compromising on fun. Here are five of the cheapest but still excellent ski resorts in Europe.
Sauze dOlx, Italy

This idyllic Italian resort has managed to shake its reputation as a party destination and is now a good choice for those seeking great skiing and a mellow atmosphere. Even in high season, it is never too crowded, which means that you never have to queue long. The lack of people also helps to create a relaxed vibe in the evenings, during which you can enjoy fine food and a few drinks without spending a fortune.

Borovets, Bulgaria

The oldest ski resort in Bulgaria, Borovets is the very definition of cheap and cheerful. It is much loved by young groups looking for lively parties once the sun goes down. The skiing is also excellent: there are wide, open pistes mainly above the tree line and slopes that are best suited to beginners and intermediates. Borovets is well-known for its ski schools, so those looking to develop their skills will appreciate this affordable resort, too.

Andermatt, Switzerland

Switzerland is famously a wealthy place, but skiing in Andermatt can be surprisingly af-fordable. It features two main skiing areas: one is situated at a lofty altitude of 2,963m and provides fantastic powder. Andermatt is also a good place for those looking for plenty of fun away from the pistes, as it features snowshoeing, sledging, swimming, spa days and lots more to keep visitors entertained.

Westendorf, Austria

Westendorf is somewhat of a hidden gem because it sits at just 800m, but you can get good snow at the start of the year with a few brilliant pistes and easy access to 279km of Skiwelts runs. The accommodation, food and drinks cost peanuts in comparison to some places, so you can make big savings whilst enjoying the lively atmosphere and lovely views.

Les Menuires

My personal choice would be Les Menuires. Ski holidays here are great for those looking to shred powder, as you get easy access to the enormous Les Trois Vallees ski region. There is a fun and lively atmosphere throughout, as there are lots of cheap places to eat, drink and enjoy other activities. Whats more, the cosy apartments are much, much cheaper than anywhere else in Les Trois Vallees. Essentially, Les Menuires ski holidays are a fun, easy and affordable way to enjoy one of the most popular regions in the entire world.

Whether you choose Sauze dOulx, Borovets, Andermatt, Westerdorf or Les Menuires, skiing holidays will be cheap and cheerful at any of these resorts whilst still providing you with an amazing experience. Skiing can be an extremely expensive activity at many up-market resorts around the world, but there are also more affordable places that ensure that it is an activity and holiday type that can be enjoyed by those on a budget, too.

Belinda Smythson works for Ski Amis, a specialist ski travel agency and booking service that has been helping avid skiers craft their perfect winter holiday for over a quarter of a century. With a team that has years of experience planning Les Menuires ski breaks, as well as holidays in the Three Valleys, Paradiski, Espace Killy and Chamonix Valley, Ski Amis is the go-to company for winter sports fans looking for the experience of a lifetime.

5 Changes Coming to Fleet Management in 2017

5 Changes Coming to Fleet Management in 2017

As a fleet manager, you want to keep your eye on the ball, become informed about news, trends, and legislation, and watch out for unexpected curve balls in the fleet management industry.

To do your job effectively, you need to keep abreast of all thats new to accurately manage budgets, reduce financial and safety risks and increase company revenues.

After all, we all need to make our bosses, stakeholders, and customers happy.

I want you to be on top of your game, so Ive compiled 5 changes you need to watch for in 2017.

Lets hit the road.

1. Fuel Management Changes

Its no surprise to fleet managers that fuel cost is a key budget concern to the fleet industry.

In the beginning of 2017 The International Energy Agency predicted the global crude oil surplus will diminish, driving up fuel costs.

The increase occurred due to OEM and various other oil producers putting a cap on the production of oil, which fuels their own profits.

Not surprised?

But fleet managers are taking precautionary measures to increase fuel efficiency. A couple of these steps include purchasing more fuel-efficient vehicle models and downsizing the size of vehicles without sacrificing vehicle performance.

Managers are also implementing better fuel efficiency by encouraging better driving practices.

Some drivers receive monetary rewards for practicing more insightful driving habits.

2. Telematics

With more telematics technology installed in vehicles this year, fleet managers are better able to manage rising costs more effectively.

The utilization of implementing telematics boosted results in decreased fuel consumption, better routing and company productivity.

Another tactic companies are employing is the use of SIM cards in telematics devices as a way to lower data costs.

Whether for real-time monitoring or for scheduling, financial spending, and vehicle servicing, this evolving trend seems to be helping the fleet industry.

3. Paperless document management

The world is moving towards a paperless environment for business transactions and the fleet industry is no different.

Companies are trading in paper printing methods for electronic communications for purchase orders, delivery status, vehicle monitoring and reporting.

These key processes are now conducted electronically through email, online portals and on company websites.

4. GPS Tracking Systems

Approximately 30-40% of fleet companies use GPS tracking devices to manage aspects of business.

Like telematics, these systems help to minimize risk, decrease costs, and increase revenue.

GPS component tracking provides fleet managers more control over their business in these ways:

Theft risks go down
Driving efficiency goes up
Managers are able to monitor key standards like hours of service better

5. Vehicle availability

It happens frequently: Trucks get recalled and vehicles require maintenance regularly. Upfitter schedules can keep vehicles out of service. These inconveniences cause delays in your business, placing more stress on you.

One solution fleet management companies are using is bailment pool programs.

With fewer fleets doing their own upfitting, more companies are turning to bailment pools these days as a smarter alternative to keep business moving.

The above article highlights five changes coming to fleet management in 2017.

What other changes do you see coming down the pike?

4WD Off Roading Tips Every Beginner Needs to Know

4WD Off Roading Tips Every Beginner Needs to Know

4WD Off Roading Tips Every Beginner Needs to Know

Most people who own a 4WD vehicle never take it off the road. They buy the vehicle with 4WD for higher resale or maybe to drive to and from work in the snow. If youre ready for some real adventure, its time to take it off roading.

4WD off roading can take several forms which will depend on the terrain youll be driving in. Regardless of the conditions preparation and safety are your top priorities.

If youre new to off roading, keep you and your passengers safe by following these important tips.

Understand the Basics

If youve never been 4WD off roading, its important to learn some of the basic terminologies before you even climb behind the wheel.

4X4 High

All-purpose 4WD mode. It differs from standard 2WD in that all 4 tires are powered and engaged.

4X4 Low

4WD mode with a lower gear engaged. Your top speed will be lower because youll have higher torque in the wheels. Used in more difficult terrains and in helping you to get unstuck.

Locking Differential

This indicates how fast the wheels are turning. In most 4WD modes, each wheel spins at a different speed in order to accommodate for the differing terrain. When you lock your differential, the wheels will all spin at the same speed. Another useful tip for when you get stuck.

Approach Angle

The maximum incline a 4WD vehicle can handle without having the suspension or any other vehicle part touch the surface.

Expect the Unexpected

Once you know the basic terminology, its time to start prepping your vehicle to go 4WD off roading. Off roading vets will tell you to always expect, and prepare, for the unexpected. Heres a quick list of items to have with you when you set out on your adventure:

Full tank of gas
Tow ropes
Portable air compressor
Spare tire(s)
First aid kit
Shovel
Spare tanks of water
Two-way radios (often no cell service where youre headed)
High-lift jack

If you have these items on hand, youll normally be able to get yourself out of any trouble you may run into.

Prepare Your Tires

Tires are the single most important piece of gear when youre 4WD off roading. Ensuring that you have the proper tires and that theyre prepared for your journey are very important to ensure you have a safe trip.

First, make sure you change your tires to all-terrain tires. The tires your vehicle came with are optimized for road driving. They will not hold up offroad, so invest in some good all-terrain tires that will help you to manage your vehicle off the beaten path.

The next question that 4WD off roading beginners often ask: Should You Lower Your Tire Pressures When You Take Your 4WD Offroad? The short answer is yes. But youll need a tire gauge and deflator to help you achieve the correct pressure.

Know Your Limitations

Once youve prepared your vehicle and you know youre stuff, its time to head out 4WD off roading. Its important on these first few trips to know your limitations. Go slow. Dont tackle extreme terrain (like bouldering or river crossing).

Have Fun 4WD Off Roading

Last but not least, have fun! 4WD off roading can get seriously addictive and is a wonderful way to escape from it all! Be prepared and be safe and youll always have a great time!

4 Tricks to Having a Successful Business Through an Online Presence

In today's business climate, a company's online presence is almost as important to its success as its products, services and customer support.

Building a strong online presence should be a priority for businesses of all sizes, whether they are brand new or many years old. Here are four tricks that all enterprises can take advantage of to establish themselves online in a way that will promote customer engagement and sales.

Produce Video Content

When most people think about online content, their thoughts turn immediately to written articles. However, in the multimedia online climate that has emerged over the last decade, video content is a powerful and simple way for businesses to convey their messages.

By creating videos filled with helpful information, you can get customers interested in your brand and generate trust with them. Don't be overly promotional, but instead include only a brief mention of your company's products or services.

Use an Industry-specific Domain

Selecting a domain name is one of the most important elements of creating an online business presence. Since the early days of the internet, the familiar .com domain extension has been by far the most common.

In recent years, though, several industry-specific domain extensions have appeared that businesses can use to clearly communicate to customers what they offer. A business in the automotive industry, for example, might make use of the companies like Dominion Domains. Explore different extensions and pick the one that you feel best represents what your business does.

Gather Customer Reviews

Business owners have always known that a satisfied customer is one of the most valuable commodities a company can have. With the power of the internet, this value is multiplied many times over. If you want to attract new customers, you should use your website and social media channels to gather reviews from past clients.

The more positive reviews you accumulate, the more likely new first-time customers will be to trust that your business is the right one to help them.

Build an Email List

Once you have successfully acquired a new customer, you shouldn't move on from him or her after one sale. Instead, you should try to engage with that person multiple times in order to foster the possibility for more business in the future.

For this reason, you should gather email addresses from customers who have bought from you in the past so that you can stay in contact with them. An email list can turn one-time buyers into repeat customers, thus increasing your company's return on its investment in customer acquisition.

Using these simple tricks, your business can build an online presence that will pay for itself many times over. By building your brand online, you'll be able to increase your sales, reach new customer and engage with people all over the world who need the products or services you offer.

4 Tips to Pick the Perfect Hand Tools for DIY Car Repairs

There is no doubt that doing your car servicing and repairs can save you a ton of money, but to work on modern cars without damaging anything else, you need good quality hand tools.  Modern engine compartments are getting more crowded every year, and you could easily damage something, like an expensive electronic component (or your fingers) when a badly fitting tool slips off a fastener.

So how do professional mechanics avoid these problems? Read on for some tips from professional mechanics on how to buy the perfect hand tools for car repairs.

Only buy what you need

Unlike professional mechanics, you dont need truckloads of tools if you are only going to be working on your own car, and buying full sets of wrenches, screwdrivers, and sockets is an easy mistake to make.

Full sets of anything are expensive, and you will eventually end up with many tools you never use on your car. The first thing to buy is a good repair manual since the explanations of repair procedures are usually accompanied by a list of tools you need for that particular job. Go through the entire manual, and compile a list of everything you need to tackle the jobs you feel confident of performing successfully.

Next, make sure there are no duplicated items on the tool list, but resist the temptation to rush out and get everything on your list from the nearest hardware store, for reasons we will explain next.

Only buy tools from the experts

Almost all tool manufacturers offer their product as individual items, but it is unlikely you will find individual items at your local hardware store. However, before you buy anything elsewhere, take some time to consult with the repair shops in your area. Professional mechanics earn their living with their tools, so they are the best-qualified people to ask about which brands of tools are the best.

When you consult with the local mechanics, you will no doubt notice that none of them uses Unbranded tools. There is a reason for that; Unbranded tools are often, if not always, badly designed, and are prone to breakages and failures. Moreover, Unbranded tools are often not made to conform to any accepted engineering and quality standards, so you might find that the new, shiny sockets you just bought dont fit into confined spaces in your engine because their outside diameters are a fraction of an inch too big.

Bear in mind that engines are assembled in the factory with standard tools, so the clearances around fasteners are designed to accept all standard, but branded tools. The only places where you will find tools of this standard are some of the bigger auto parts stores, or dedicated tool merchants that carry tools that are guaranteed to conform to accepted engineering and quality standards.

Buy the best tools available

You may save some money by buying less expensive tools, but this means that you may have to replace items like pliers, ratchet handles, ratchet wrenches, and other items with moveable parts every so often. By buying the best tools available, as opposed to the best you can afford, you only have to buy tools once, since good quality tools will provide a lifetime of reliable service.

However, when you buy tools, make sure the store gives you a lifetime warranty against breakages and failures. Most reputable tool manufacturers offer a no-questions-asked warranty on ratchet handles, extension bars, and sockets, so make sure you get this warranty.

Get calibration certificates

When you buy items like Combination Wrenches, make sure the packaging includes a calibration certificate. This is especially important in the case of torque wrenches since an inaccurate tool can cause major mechanical failures when fasteners are not torqued correctly.

An impact wrench, regardless of whether it is electric or pneumatic is a very handy tool to own, since it can save you a lot of time and trouble undoing stubborn fasteners. However, check the maximum torque stated on the packaging against the calibration certificate to avoid ending up with a tool that is not powerful enough to do what you want it to do, such as removing stubborn CV axle nuts.

The powerful suction of the machine is capable of dragging all the possible dust and dirt from every nook and corner of the car. Even a soft bristled brush is efficient to dust the dirt from the fur of the mat effectively.

Dealing with Cleaning of the Ceiling

A continuous non-maintenance of the ceiling of the vehicle is going to produce foul smell from the car. Therefore, the reputed car cleaning companies always stress on the car interior cleaning in Perth. This thorough interior cleaning ensures a hygienic place to sit inside.

Dealing with the Underside of the Mats

Based on the type of the mat, cleaning the opposite side of the mats is a challenging task. The washable mats can be cleaned with soap water. The other types of mats that are to be kept away from the water and are strictly meant for dusting, need to be wiped with a wet cloth and thendried.

Conclusion

Dirt, dust, and stains are the must-removed undesirous things in a vehicle. It is not only unhygienic but also produces foul odour on a long run. All the effective methods should be followed to make the vehicle- commercial or private- a clean and hygiene to ride.

Create a Relevant Logo

Having a logo is important because it gives people an easy way to recognize your brand.

People are far more likely to memorize a visual image than a name. You can also choose to include your name in the logo, to further increase the chance that people will remember your name.

When designing a logo, keep in mind that it has to be relevant. As a transport logo, that means you could include an image of a bus or a car. Make it something people will associate with your industry.

Make sure your logo looks highly professional. If youre not comfortable designing one yourself, get a logo designer on it. After its done, you need to include the logo on business cards, posters, vehicles and so forth.

Create a Website

After you get your new logo, its time to create your online presence.

As a transport company, you should write about anything that is relevant to your business and industry.

For example, you could write an article about the benefits of your online seat selection system, or the onboard comforts of your Denver to Vail transportation.

Any blog post you write is an advertisement for your company. It would become even more valuable if readers start sharing it on social media.

Launch a Social Media Marketing Campaign

Posting on social media is a great way to extend the reach of your transport company. Ideally, your company should have its own Facebook page, where you could share new routes and seasonal ticket promotions.

You could also use Facebook to launch a marketing campaign. This is a good option because you will be able to target any demographic you choose. So if youre a transport company in Denver, then you can choose to only target people in Colorado.

3 Tips to Getting Out of a Bad Marriage

"Love is blind, but marriage restores its sight."

-Georg Christoph Lictenberg

If you are in an unhealthy, unhappy relationships trying to decide whether to stay or go the mere fact that you are asking this question is not a good sign. You have an entire life ahead of you make so make sure you are going to spend it with someone that deserves you!

There is never an easy way to end a marriage. But, if you are in an unhappy, unhealthy relationship and you stay, what's easy about staying in a marriage that is making your life miserable? What is the price you pay for never having your needs met and living with less than you deserve?

The first step in getting out of a bad marriage is to decide. Decide what you want in life. Decide how you want to live the rest of your life. Decide if you are a better person for being married to this person or if this marriage only causes you heartache and pain. Decide if you are settling for less than you deserve and if you want to live just like you are right now, without anything changing. Is this really what you want?

There is an old song by Paul Simon, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover. The reality is once you make the decision to exit a bad marriage, it won't matter how you choose to leave because the mere fact that you've finally decided will allow you to move forward without going back.

Second you want to have an exit plan. Get all of your ducks in a row. Know what your financial situation is and what your options are. Know where you will live and what your options are and know when and how you are going to leave. Have close friends and family ready and willing to help you with this move. Don't just spring it on your partner without a strategy for leaving.

Again, once you decide, there won't be anything that your partner can say to change your mind. After all of your attempts to make things work, after all of the crying, screaming, pleading, therapy and all of your heartfelt efforts to keep your marriage together, you can walk away holding your head high knowing that you did everything you could do before walking away.

And the last step in getting out of a bad marriage is to believe in a better future. Know that where you are going has to be better than living a lifetime without the respect and love that you deserve. Know that as hard as it is to walk away, it would be much harder to live your whole life without any hope of true happiness. And know that ultimately it's your decision as to how you live your life, so choose wisely!

3 Reasons Why Autonomous Vehicles Will Be Here Sooner

In today's fast moving world, technology and new inventions are popping up every day, making life easier on us. The auto and transportation industry is no different. We have seen this industry progress very quickly in the past few years. Seeing the invention of electric vehicles, more efficient vehicles and now including the amount of autonomous safety features, the question is often brought up, what will the auto industry look like in ten years? While the answer may still be years away, here are three reasons why autonomous or driverless vehicles will be here sooner rather than later.

1. Humans are bad drivers. If the industry moves to being 100% autonomous or self-driving, the need for us human drivers would be completely eliminated. This would bring down accidents and auto related fatalities nearly by 100%. While it is hard to imagine no human drivers on the road, it makes sense when we see how safe these autonomous safety features can keep us. Not all drivers are bad, but in today's technologically driven world almost everyone you see will have a smartphone in their hand or pocket. And the same goes for while they are behind the wheel. These smartphones allow drivers to become easily distracted which results in accidents and injuries, often deadly. You cannot put all the blame on smart phone use however, other things like eating, doing your makeup, fixing the radio, smoking and even talking to your friend in the passenger seat are all easy distractions. It is important to just focus on driving.

2. Technology is making us more comfortable. Technology arguably runs our lives. It surrounds us and makes our daily lives easier. The same goes for these driverless vehicles and their technologies. These new safety features have come around so quickly and the art has nearly been perfected. It is almost impossible to find a new car without some sort of autonomous safety feature. Anything from voice control, rear-view cameras, automatic parking, connected wi-fi and Bluetooth and automatic braking you can expect to see. As these additions become even more common and present in our driving experiences, we will get more comfortable and used to them. And once we realize the ease and safety that these features provide, we won't look back.

3. Everyone can be apart of the autonomous industry. From young children to old grandparents or those with a disability, anyone can use these autonomous driving services. The safety and ease of use of these self-driving vehicles will allow anyone to get to their destination, even if you were not able to physically drive regardless of the reason. This will make transportation easier and safer, especially for the disabled and elderly community. These self-driving vehicles will gives us more freedom, independence and options for everyone. Imagine your next road trip not having to worry about driving, directions or how your grandparent might get there. Driverless vehicles and the safety features they come equipped with may be revolutionary, not only to the transportation and automobile industry, but also to those people who might have felt left out all of these years.

The use and addition of autonomous vehicles into the industry would be huge, helping to create safer roads, more opportunity and a better industry. Companies all over have been pouring money and time into these self-driving features and vehicles to perfect them. And not just automakers, companies like Uber, Google and Amazon have begun to invest into these fields. While this change may not happen for another five to ten years, once we get a taste of the autonomous industry we will never look back.

Workplace Duty Of Care

Workplace Duty Of Care

Image source: http://slideplayer.com/4311908/14/images/11/Duties+of+Care+The+Health+%26+Safety+at+Work+Act+1974+places+specific+Duties+of+Care+on+the+following+people+in+the+workplace%3A.jpg

All employers have a duty of care towards their staff. But what exactly does this mean, and how should it be put into practice? This article explores these questions in greater detail, and looks at what action you can take if this duty is breached.

What Is A Duty Of Care?

An employer is responsible for providing reasonable care for the health and safety of employees. This is known as a 'duty of care' and means all employers (no matter what the size of the business) must take measures to provide the following:-

* A Safe Workplace - Employers must ensure the premises in which their staff work are safe. This should begin with a risk assessment, a useful tool for identifying any potential risks to an employee's welfare. Steps must then be taken to guarantee all health and safety regulations are adhered to, from providing adequate lighting and ventilation to removing any hazardous elements.

* A Safe System of Work - An employer must guarantee a safe system of work is enforced. This involves instructing staff on safe working practice, as well as providing the correct level of training as and when it is needed. If appropriate, a system of supervision should also be implemented.

* Adequate Materials - Employees should be supplied with the materials needed to carry out their job. This may include equipment such tools and machinery, or other materials such as clothes or protective garments. Not only should these items be suitable for the job in question, but they must also be maintained to a safe standard.

* A Competent Body of Staff - An employer is must also ensure a competent body of staff is employed. This is because someone who does not have the right skills and training can pose a considerable risk to other employees. Furthermore, an employer needs to be aware if a member of staff has any personal, social or healthcare problems, as this can also increase the chance of an accident occurring.

A Breach Of Duty.

Should an employer fail to take reasonable steps to protect the health and safety of their employees and there is an accident, then it can be said there has been a breach of duty of care. In such an event, it may be possible for an employee to take legal action.

What Can You Do?

If you have suffered a workplace accident that occurred as a result of your employer's negligence, you need to seek legal advice as soon as possible. A solicitor will be able to assess the details of your case and suggest whether or not you could make a claim. If you do indeed decide to pursue a claim and it is successful, you will be awarded compensation - both for the pain and suffering you have experienced, and for any financial losses you have incurred.

3 Practical Robots Already in Use

Robots are drastically altering the modern day workplace. A large misconception surrounding such automated technologies is that robotic applications can only be utilized by corporate Goliaths. However, as time progresses, an increasing number of business owners are beginning to comprehend the boundless growth potential that accompanies the deployment of robotics. Here are some innovative robotic creations with unique industrial applications.

YoBot

Everyone wants to get the most out of their vacation. Unfortunately, the fun may become stalled when travelers arrive too early to check in at their hotel and are forced to haul their luggage around as they wait for their room to be prepared. However, thanks to the Yotel Hotels ingenious new robotic creation coined the Yobot, visitors are swiftly being alleviated of their luggage storage woes.

With the help of MFG Automation, the Yotel was able to successfully alter a robotic arm which was previously utilized in factory automation. As a result, the hotels luggage processing procedures have been completely automated.

The large robotic arm is encased behind a glass wall where visitors are able to watch the machine at work. After interacting with a touchscreen, Yobot provides guests with a container for which to place their luggage in. Shortly after, the box is weighed and placed into a compartment along a spacious wall of lockers. Yobot then issues a receipt to the guest for when they wish to finally pick up their bag.

Robotic arms are already utilized within the medical and automotive industries, however, this is the first instance an automated arm has been used to help travelers haul their bags.

OSHbot

A renowned fallacy concerning robotics is the idea that it is simply the mundane and repetitive tasks that will receive the attention of robotic automation. While the mechanization of monotonous duties is in fact at the forefront of automation, there are however several unique companies seeking to improve efficiency by automating the customer service aspects of their business.

OSHbot is a prodigious creation which fills this niche of robotic automation. Recently, an OSHbot retail service robot was installed in the midtown San Jose Orchard Supply Hardware store. The 5-foot-tall autonomous robot is capable of greeting customers as they arrive in both English and Spanish. Visitors of the store are able to communicate with OSHbot in a number of ways. Firstly, customers can convey exactly what they are looking for to the robot, or they can simply hold up an image of the item to OSHbots camera and the robot will direct them to the precise location of the item in the store.

OSHbot is also able to track inventory in real time and is capable of informing employees when an item is no longer in stock.

Advanced Intelligent Systems Inc.

Having faced increased environmental and labor-force challenges, agriculture is an industry at a crossroads. The sector is constantly evolving and forward-thinking farmers are embracing innovative solutions to stay a step ahead of the game. By employing innovative robotic solutions, Advanced Intelligent Systems Inc. (AIS)s revolutionary UGV technology is guaranteed to alleviate farmers from the complexities of crop cultivation.

As greenhouse nurseries have begun to migrate towards container-based production, these cumbersome containers require periodic movement to accommodate growth and seasonality. However, this arduous task is often carried out manually by foreign temporary workers who are both costly and difficult to source. Luckily, there is a solution.

AISs Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) has been developed to replace employees who perform these hazardous tasks. This flexible autonomous system is capable of transporting various plant pot sizes and weights according to a pre-programmed pattern. As a result, the intricacies of employee turnover are utterly eliminated, as AISs UGVs are capable of working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not to mention, there will be no need to pay costs such as worker insurance, medical, housing, transportation, and even wages.

Why Do Dogs Shake And Shiver

Image source: https://cmeimg-a.akamaihd.net/cute-article-grid/cuteness/s3fs-public/diy_blog/Why-Do-Dogs-Shake-Themselves-When-Not-Wet2.jpg

Dogs shake and shiver but there is not a big difference between them. A shaking dog can mean more than pain or minor irritation and a shivering dog evidently feels cold. While a shaking dog may tremble from too much weight and fun but in most situations, the cause of shivering and shaking in dogs are because of the same reasons.

It is not of a big concern to see a pet dog shaking after a bath because it's the usual way of cooling. When dog shaking is accompanied by whining and restlessness then it definitely means that the dog is in trouble. When a dog shivers, it is a sign of illness.

Dogs shiver because of fever, fear, anxiety, seizures, shock and hypoglycemia. A pet dog will naturally shiver when it is suffering from high fever and it may break out in chills. As dog is a sensitive animal, it may shivers from fear and too much emotional stress. Anything that can injure the nervous system of a dog makes it shiver. If a dog eats toxic substances, it can bring him into seizure. Dogs are also shocked by life-altering incidents because they are sensitive. Sometimes they are traumatized by fights with other dogs or a car accident that could have nearly killed them. This can cause shivering and in some serious cases also resulting in death.

The causes of shaking in dogs are physical pain, cold, epilepsy, old age and viral infection. Physical pain can mean a cut, wound or a blister on dog's skin which can be because of any accident. A dog can shake and whine especially if it's not used to bathing. When a dog shakes for no clear reason then it needs a vet. There are no fixed rules on general shaking as some breed of dogs are prone to shaking while some are not. Even fierce and cruel dogs meet their match and they start shaking. Dogs also shake when they are faced by something greater than their fear and stress. Epilepsy is also brought on by an abnormality in the dog's nervous system. Epileptic fits are fatal and the vet is the best person to treat this. Old age dogs are subject to disorderly body movements particularly around the neck and head area. When the dog is past its average lifespan, it usually shows many of the symptoms of human old age. Viral infection like dog flu brings a dog to short episodes of coughing and shaking.

Minor causes of shaking are of not a big worry as they are curable; it's the serious ones that need professional attention. One should be careful about minor shaking as it is caused by kennel cough and a human can catch it too.

If one cares about the pet dog, anything than stresses it should be avoided. If the problem is serious that it should be taken to a vet.

3 of the Worst Moving Scams You Should Beware of

Over ten million Americans are relocating each year. To make all of these relocations possible, a huge industry operates 24/7. But while people entrust their lifelong belongings to the moving companies, they risk being ripped off for their money if they sign up with an unreputable and unreliable mover.

Protect yourself against losing money and sanity here are 3 of the worst scams that are most common in the moving industry as claimed by LongDistanceMoving.com.

Moving scam #1: broker vs. mover

Before you sign up with any moving company, you must carefully check if it is really a moving company or a household good broker. Otherwise, it can cost you a tremendous amount of money.

An easy way to do this is to check the companys USDOT number via this website: http://www.safersys.org/CompanySnapshot.aspx.

If the company is a broker, you will see its Entity type as Broker. Additionally, it will have zero power units and drivers.

On the contrary, if the company is a real mover, its Entity type is Carrier. Fields indicating power units and drivers will contain some numbers.

P.S. Another trick to finding out whether the company is a broker or real mover is insurance (use the same website to check this out). Brokers hold Bond insurance-type while movers hold Cargo insurance type.

The reason you have to avoid brokers is that they are not real movers. They simply accept your order and deposit, then hire a moving company to handle your order. Should any problems arise, you will be redirected from one company to another. Your broker will say they cant help you because they are not movers. The movers will refuse to help you because the order was accepted by the broker.

You can imagine what will ensue. Always sign up with a moving company, not a broker.

Moving scam #2: messing up cubic feet

A typical scenario used in this scam looks like this. Someone from the moving company will reach out to you (typically over the phone) and ask if youd like to get a free and instant cost estimate. Most people would love to, so the salesman will ask you to give him/her a list of your inventory.

Naturally, you are not going to list every single item you want to take with to your new place. So the salesman offers you to calculate the cost based on the average numbers they know from their experience. For example, a 2-bedroom apartment will account for 300 cubic feet, he says, and this will cost you just $1,200 since 200 cubic feet cost $4.

That is cheap so most people are hooked. However, the reality is that a 2-bedroom apartment is usually at least 600 to 800 cubic feet. This means the customers will encounter an unpleasant surprise on the moving day when the movers will charge them lots more.

The bottom line? Always remember that a professional moving company will send someone to your place to check everything and make a cost estimate. Without an on-site inspection, its impossible to evaluate costs accurately.

Moving scam #3: weighing belongings

Remember this golden rule: you should always overlook the weighing process. If you doubt the results, you have a lawful right guaranteed to you by the Department of Transportation to demand to re-weigh your belongings.

One of the most common ways moving companies drive up weight are:

adding load on the scale when the customer is not present with them;
you may know the weighing process works the following way: first, the empty truck is weighed, then it is loaded with your stuff and weighed again. The difference indicates the real weight of your possessions. The common trick is to weigh an empty truck using an empty diesel tank but filling it with fuel when weighing a full truck. This adds up another 400 pounds.

Remember about these scams next time you consider hiring a moving company and commit yourself to overlooking the entire process even if its not always the most exciting undertaking.

What You Need To Know About Switchgear

What You Need To Know About Switchgear

There are two systems or panels that are used to redistribute power or electric current to other equipment or circuits. One is the switchboard and the other is switchgear.

Electric switchboards are a device that directs the electricity from one source to another. It is composed of an assembly of panels. Each panel contains switches to allow electricity to be redirected.

With a switchboard, a technician is protected from possible electrocution. The switches in the board control the amount of current that goes into the switchboard. Such switches are fed from a generator which has AC frequency and load sharing controls. It also has gauges that show the frequency and synchroscope.

It is important that the amount of electric power that goes into the switchboard is equal to the electric power going. When you take a look inside the switchboard, you will see a bank of busbars.

The busbars, which are generally bare and supported by insulators, are wide strips of copper that connect to switchgear. The busbars act to allow passage of large electric current through the switchboard.

Before the switchboard is opened for maintenance, it is important to isolate the power because the busbars are bare. These active busbars are a deadly source of power. When working on live switchboards, precautionary measures are crucial. Be ready with your protective equipment such as thick rubber mats and gloves, when working with an open switchboard.

Switchboards are isolated and protected with other equipment including substations, motors, high or medium voltage distribution networks and transformers.

Switchgear are also essential a type of electrical distribution device that is used to convert incoming electrical power into several smaller voltages. Switchgear can also be used as a circuit breaker.

There are many different types of circuit breaker switchgear. Vacuum circuit switchgear have minimal arcing. The arc quenches when it is stretched to less the 2 to 3 mm. They're frequently used in modern medium-voltage switchgear of up to 35,000 volts.

If you need to de-energizing equipment, you can use switchgear. It also clears faults downstream and comes in varied parameters, which include number of panels, electrical specifications and mounting style.

The common types of switchgear are vacuum circuit breakers, oil insulated switchgear, gas insulated switchgear, and a simple open air circuit breaker. Oil insulated switchgear depend on an oil vaporization blast through its arc.

The gas insulated switchgear stretches the arc with a magnetic field and also depends on the dielectric strength of the gas to quench the stretched arc. The open air switchgear circuit breakers use compressed air to blow out the arc. The displaced air that tries to escape thus blows out the arc.

Circuit breakers are a unique type of switchboards that interrupts fault currents. Their design is especially made for interruption of fault currents.

The Classifications of switchboards are based on the current rating, the amount of interrupting rating, by voltage class, insulating medium, construction types, operating method, type of current, interrupting type, and application.

3 Major Reasons for Air Conditioning Pipes Getting Frozen

As temperatures change, its quite common for people to come across the problem of freezing of air conditioning pipes at home. Other than causing great inconvenience, frozen pipes may turn dangerous at times if not dealt properly. Pipes coming to the air conditioning or heating device are more likely to get frozen even though its insulated up to the unit. To ensure proper cooling or heating, the machine should be repaired by a professional. Before going to a local dealer or HVAC specialist, its necessary to get known to the common causes for pipes freezing. Here are the 3 major reasons for why pipes get frozen at times;

Loss of the Freon is a major cause for air conditioning pipes to freeze within. The level of Freon or air conditioning refrigerant goes low resulting in frozen pipes. When this happens, the whole ac unit finds it difficult to manage which eventually leads to improper cooling at home. This may be due to leaks in any parts of the unit and the problem cannot be solved unless its looked by a professional. Coolant leaks can be easily repaired by ac specialists who will have the necessary equipments to restore the ac unit to its normal operation. Also sometimes the whole unit freezes by itself. This may also lead pipes to go freezing. In such conditions, stop the machine and get help from an expert.

Clogs inside the parts of the unit forms the next major cause for pipes to get frozen. Bad air flow makes the air conditioning evaporator, drain line and other parts inside to get clogged. There are also possibilities for air filters to get clogged thus restricting the air flow inside resulting in freezing the lines. Filters and indoor coils need to be changed regularly to ensure proper cooling. Also since trained professionals use advanced techniques to remove the particles that clogs inside, getting help from a reliable HVAC specialist is a wise choice.

Setting thermostat level to be too low is another cause for the icing of pipe units. People often make the mistake of setting thermostat in a lower temperature in order to allow the system to cool faster. Doing so will make the machine to run longer and eventually causes the whole system to ice up. During such situations, its better to switch off ac and letting the fan to run for some time.

Above mentioned are the three major causes for pipe freezing. In order to avoid experiencing such problems in future, regular maintenance of ac and heating units is considered to be strongly necessary.

3 Incentives to Becoming a Self-Employed Courier

3 Incentives to Becoming a Self-Employed Courier

3 Incentives to Becoming a Self-Employed Courier

Though working for somebody else has many positives, there are also many benefits to being self-employed. Its certainly not uncommon for couriers to take the plunge and start running their own service. So, what is it about self-employment that is so attractive?
Perhaps you are ready to say goodbye to strict dress codes, clocking in and out and listening to the same awful radio station day in and day out. Then read on! Today I am giving you three reasons why you might want to consider looking for self-employed courier jobs in the future.

1. Financial Gain

Its all very well talking about spending more time at home with the family, and that is a key motivation for many drivers who become self-employed. However, it also has to be financially viable. The good news is that you could earn as much as 45% more as a self-employed driver than when you are employed by a company.

Even accounting for deductions (now made by your employer), you still come out with a healthy profit. A benefit of running your own business is that many of your expenses can be claimed as tax deductions. Furthermore, you can make the most of your courier jobs by taking up return loads. As your client pays for the whole journey, the profit of extra jobs goes straight into your pocket.

2. You Can Pick and Choose

Unlike when you're employed, you have total control over which courier jobs you take on. Of course, when you are just starting out youll want to take the majority of work offered. But when you have built up a reliable client base, you will have far more flexibility with the courier jobs you undertake. This means that you can refuse difficult clients or long and tough drives. What's more, you can schedule your work around family commitments and make sure that youre home to put the kids to bed.

Another great aspect of being able to pick and choose is that you can increase the variety of your jobs. You will be able to grow and develop as a driver and as a business person. You can work on increasing your efficiency, improving customer satisfaction and can explore and innovate in a way that's rarely permitted by an employer.

3. Home Comforts

It may seem counterintuitive, but there are many benefits to running a business from home. Firstly, you get to spend more time at home, and this means more time with your loved ones. Whether you park the van outside your house or nearby, not having to travel to a base depot everyday will cut down on unnecessary time spent on the road, along with saving you money on petrol.

When you run a business from home, a certain proportion of your expenses, such as gas, water, electricity and property tax, may be tax-deductible. Its always worth investigating where you can save money, especially when youre managing your own business. If Ive inspired you to start a new venture where you are the boss, make sure to do your research first!

What Are Gaelic Runes

What Are Gaelic Runes

Gaelic runes are also known as the "runes of the north" or even Norse Scottish rune craft. They are actually based on an old Nordic myth about a figure named Asa-Odhinn, who sacrificed himself on the gallows tree of the worlds to give mankind the knowledge of the Orkney Runes which later mutated into the more contemporary Gaelic Runes.

Vikings brought the simple alphabet that was inscribed on stones and that was also used for fortune telling and magic spells. The Vikings arrived as raiders and many of them interbred with the natives to form a mixed race called Foreigner Gael. They mainly settled in Kilbar on Barra and in Gorvan and also in Orkey, Dublin and York.

There were only sixteen Gaelic Runes so their use was very simple. Usually they were inscribed to describe the ownership of jeweler, swords or other items.

The Isle of Man is a center for Norse Gaelic Kings in the Scottish Isles. In this area there are thirty-six very historically important rune carvings. These Runes have elements of both cultures and as a collection of thirty-six symbols are known as the Gaelic Tree Alphabet.

The Orkney runes consist of the following:

FE the cattle rune stands for wealth (goods and chattels)

UR is the 'melting of ice' and the return of fertility to o the earth after winter, the strength and growth of the earth itself.

THURS is the lustful rune that means sex. It means rough sex and can bode sickness for women

AS is a loch or river outlet and it means marriage and prosperity. Water is prosperous in this Gaelic culture.

REIDH is the rune of riding

Kaun is the rune of sickness and scorge

Hagl is the rune of hail and storm

NAUTHR symbols tough times in which 'the naked are frost frozen'."

IS or ice is the rune of freezing and stillness. It denotes isolation and possible illness.

AR is the rune of sowing and reaping and denotes the rewards of the harvest. SOL is the Sun Goddess, whose rune means success, health, happiness and good sailing.

TYR is the rune of the War God who sacrificed his hand to the wolf Fenrir for the good of the gods. It is a warnig not to be bitten.

BJARKAN is the birch rune and symbolizes birth, fruitfulness and love.

MADHR is the rune of mankind and good dealings between folk.

LOGR symbolizes the fish harvest, the magic of the sea gods and the all-potential of the deep.

YR is the rune of the deep death knowledge, evergreen rebirth, and making an accurate shot with an arrow. It means one's goals will be achieved.

Treatment Expectations for Post Traumatic Stress DisorderDepression

As an individual with post traumatic stress disorder and depression, I've found it extremely difficult to know what to expect for treatment of my disorders. There isn't much written about the average joe out there that either suspects there's a possibility he/she may be experiencing PTSD or those who have been diagnosed with PTSD and have completed some treatment, but don't know what to expect for recovery.

My initial thoughts when seeking a therapist didn't even include thoughts of post traumatic stress disorder. I wasn't feeling well enough to try to self diagnose anything. I was physically and mentally consumed in symptoms of both post traumatic stress and depression. Perhaps this is the stage where you find yourself.

The reason I hadn't thought of PTSD was because I didn't know anything about it. If you're feeling mentally bogged down it might be a good idea to begin to write down the symptoms you are experiencing. You can find symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder through following the link below in my BIO, and it's important to educate yourself as much as possible. It's also a good idea to realize that mental illness is a medical illness and you don't need to be afraid of that fact. The stigma that has been attached to mental illness is dissolving away to nothing. Be sure that the more you learn, the more confident you will feel about this.

If you write down your symptoms, you can more easily relay your distress to whoever you speak to on the telephone when searching for a therapist. It's very important to convey your concern for an experienced therapist with anxiety disorders and depression. This is the type of therapist you need to find. Some therapists treat certain specialties so finding one that will meet your needs will help you to eliminate some of the initial visits you may need to make.

You see, it's rare that someone finds a therapist that they feel comfortable with and is one that will meet their needs on the first try. Some people believe that they must stay with the therapist that they initially choose, but it's not true. That's just a false belief that one can easily discard. Finding a therapist is a very important task that must be taken seriously. Feeling comfortable enough to talk to your therapist is a must.

Some people feel more comfortable speaking about their inner most feelings with a person of the opposite sex. Some feel that it's easier to speak to someone of the same sex. Age may be a factor or some people like to see that the therapist has more than sufficient credentials through educational degrees to feel comfortable with discussing such intimate details. All of these factors are important and unless you know better, you can waste years looking for the right person to meet your needs.

Once you have begun seeing your counselor and have paid a visit to the associated doctor you will receive a diagnosis. This is a very exciting time so expect to feel some relief once you have a name for whatever has been plaguing you. It takes time to begin to see your symptoms begin to dissipate and finally totally disappear. Sometimes you may need to take medications to work on the intensity of your symptoms.

You may need to see your therapist once a week for a few weeks or months. Then you can expect your visits to change over to every other week, then once a month when you are ready. Everyone is different and each situation is different so you must keep that in mind if you are judging your progress in any way. Comparing your progress with others' progress if you know someone who is also in treatment can be frustrating so don't make a habit of it. Each person has different brain chemistry and if you keep that in mind, you won't try to compare your progress with others.

As time goes by you may begin to wonder if you are making progress any longer. Treatment can take years. You may want to voice those concerns to your therapist. Depending upon your type of therapy you may want to explore different types. If your therapist isn't qualified to perform different types of treatments that might prove helpful, you can always get a referral from your therapist to try someone that is qualified. Your records can be transferred and you can also consider this as progress that you are ready to attempt something new!

As I mentioned earlier it's always a good idea to study up and educate yourself about the different types of therapy available, the types of medications that are out there and of course, about your diagnosed illness(es). Science has been very busy in the mental health department and new treatment methods are appearing quite often these days. Perhaps you've started out using talk therapy and you've explored your past, your trauma(s) and your present moment with your current counselor. You may move on to some type of cognitive behavioral therapy and if you can find someone qualified to treat you, EMDR may be helpful.

There are many different types of therapy and we just never know what will help our own individual case or what combination will be useful until we try them. The same could be possible for the medications you have been prescribed. As with my own case after six years of being on one drug, I had concerns that the effects had become less and less over the long period of time. Trying a new prescription is possible if you work closely with your doctor.

A change in medications must be taken on slowly because it takes time to reduce your dosage from the original medication and then when the time is right you must slowly introduce the new medications. Writing down side effects that you may experience is also a good idea and being aware and mindful of how you are feeling every day is just good for you anyway. This way you can double check to see if you are feeling better or the same or even experiencing difficult side effects and need to change your medications again. Sometimes you may need to take an additional medication with the medication you are trying for optimal well being. Everyone is different.

The most important part of any treatment plan is that you stay in tune with how youo are feeling and relay these feelings continually to your therapist and doctor. Communication is key in eliminating distressing symptoms should they occur. One thing about PTSD that you must always be aware of are "triggers" and once you have identified them you can work with your therapist for positive and productive coping mechanisms instead of falling backwards in your treatment plan.

Triggers are reminders of your trauma(s) that may pop up from time to time in your daily life and could spark a symptom of PTSD to begin. You may experience a nightmare, or flashback or just an uncomfortable uneasy feeling. Being one diagnosed with PTSD I know how important it is to recognize and identify all triggers that one experiences because it is important to know when to use our newly developed coping mechanisms instead of falling back on negative or unproductive coping mechanisms.

Finally, I would like to stress that everyone is different. It's not appropriate to judge your progress by listening to someone else or by going by a book or article you may have read about someone else who has PTSD. Be kind and gentle with yourself as you have experienced a very difficult experience through your trauma. If you go backwards in treatment, well, you must just take a sigh of relief that you know you can go back to where you were in a very short time now that you know the way there.

For many people, visiting the dentist is something they dread. This is why finding a true professional in West Seattle Washington is so important. You see, a dentist who has experience and skill is one who will help to put you at ease, giving you peace of mind while you have dental procedures done.

Of course, finding the right person like this is no small task. With so many options to choose from, it may be difficult finding the one who is most knowledgeable, skilled, experienced? Here are several excellent tips that can help you to find the dentist that you want - one who will make it easier for you to deal with your dental problems and how to solve them.

Check with people you know. One of the best things you can do when you are trying to find a quality dentist in West Seattle Washington is to talk to people you know. Talk to members of your family, people at work, and your good friends. These are people you probably trust and they may be able to tell you about a good dentist who has provided them with great results again and again. This is especially helpful if you are not very familiar with the area that you are living in. Those who have been in the area for some time can definitely help you to find a quality dentist, and word of mouth really can be a great way to find that dental professional whom you will feel very comfortable with.

Ask other health care professionals. Maybe you have not been able to get any referrals from your friends or family members. There is still another tip that can help you to find a high quality dentist in West Seattle Washington. A great idea you can use is to ask other health care professionals. Maybe you already have a general practitioner who practices in your area. Ask him if he knows of a quality dentist whom he trusts in your area. Check with health care centers and even hospitals who are around the locality. Often, they can recommend someone to you to provide for your dental needs.

Start with a basic visit. Once you have found a dentist in West Seattle Washington whom you want to try out, make sure that you start out with a basic visit. You want to get a basic feel for the dentist, the procedures, how you feel and more. Schedule a basic appointment in the beginning so you can check out the dentist to ensure that you are really comfortable with him. Have a conversation with him and talk to him about your concerns. Look for someone who is personable, someone who makes you feel comfortable, and someone who is not going to recommend extensive procedures that you do not need.

A good dentist is going to want to know about your previous dental work, your medical history, and they will have your best interest at heart. If you do not like the dentist at the first visit, make sure you continue your search until you find one whom you are comfortable with.

Tips For Finding a Great Mechanic

Tips For Finding a Great Mechanic

The economy, did you hear? It is not so good these days. That is all we hear about on the news anymore.
Personally, I keep my television set tuned to the Discovery or History channel when I watch TV and stay away from the popular news channels. I know my 401K has been losing ground, I can see it in my quarterly report and I do not have to be reminded of it every 30 seconds.
It seems "news only" channels thrive entirely on bad news. Scaring the dickens out of us gets them the best ratings. At any rate, I will keep funding my retirement account every other week. After all, stocks are on sale these days and history shows that eventually the market will recover.

In the past many of you may have traded in your vehicle every three years or so. Modern vehicles today experience very few problems in the first three years. Should a problem arise, warranty coverage would most likely be in effect. Going to the dealer for service may have been routine and somewhat affordable. Many dealers offer lifetime oil changes when you purchase a new vehicle or even a used one. This is a great deal as long as you can resist the up-sell for other services that they will charge up to triple the fair rate.

Due to the current economic times, this may be the year to keep your car instead of trading it in on a new one. At this point, you have two choices, keep taking your car to the dealer for service and pay three times the labor and parts cost of an independent repair shop, or find one of those independent shops to work on your car when repairs and maintenance are necessary.

Finding a reputable repair shop may be a little bit of trial and error. Word of mouth may be the best way to start. Ask your friends, co-workers or relatives what automotive shop they use to work on their vehicle. Also, ask if they had to go back to the shop repeatedly for the same problem at any time. Do not wait until you break down on the side of the road to start your search for the right mechanic. When you do get a recommendation from someone, go there to get an oil change. Why oil change? Well, if they cannot get that right you will not want them doing anything major on your car.
Unbelievably, in my search for the right shop three out of four shops overfilled the engine with oil by as much as two quarts. That is almost as bad as driving with to little oil in the engine.

Once you get a recommendation, if possible stop in to make an appointment. This way you can look around a little. The shop bays should be somewhat clean and uncluttered. Look to see how the employees are working, if one of them is sitting on a chair scratching his belly while the other is cussing and throwing wrenches around, it may be a sign to check out another place. If all looks good, go inside to make the appointment. The owner or service writer should greet you in a reasonable amount of time. They should be pleasant and really listen to what you want them to do. If he acts as if they are doing you, a favor or you just ruined his whole day by showing up, leave. Do not be scared, you are not committed to them at all and your car still runs, and that is why you start your search with routine maintenance.

Lastly, listen to your gut! You know that feeling, that uncomfortable feeling, that you are about to be taken for every penny you can muster. If you get that gut feeling, walk away.
Remember, this may cost more than the 18.95 you see advertised in the paper and other places. That price is just to get you in the door with the hopes of an up-sell later. No one makes a profit at 18.95. They probably lose money. But with one spark plug and wire change at the dealer at say 400.00 to 600.00, that makes up for a lot of oil changes! When your car is finished, as soon as possible check your oil. It should be at the full mark on the dipstick and the oil should be a golden clear color. If the oil is over or under the full mark by more than a 1/8 inch call them back and let them know. If they are rude, or get aggravated, start your search for another shop. If they are apologetic and offer to make it right, let them. Hey, stuff happens. Give them another shot next time.
Always check a shops work. Become familiar with what your car looks like under the hood. More times than not I have had work done and had to put many things back together myself. Even at the dealer! The shop I currently use, I asked the owner if he had any good mechanics. He was honest and said he has two good ones and the other two were not so good. I said ok, so only the good ones will work on my car, right? He said that is right. I told him I really do not like putting my car back together after a repair job. He personally checks the work out before I pick my vehicles up. Because he knows, I certainly will!

When you do find a good shop, hang on for dear life. Good mechanics and shops are hard to come by these days. Good mechanics seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to diagnosing problems with new vehicles. Especially with those pesky check engine lights. Sometimes it may take several trips to find exactly what the true cause is even with the most sophisticated diagnostic equipment available today.

I hope this article will help you save a few bucks by finding a good independent repair shop rather than going to the dealer and paying overly inflated labor and parts cost.
